Marcel Wyss: What a premiere!
The first race for a new team is always a special one, and the Settiman Coppi e Bartali was especially important for me as I’d only had two race days previously. My goals going into the race were: first, to integrate myself well within the team and, second, to get better every day and increase my self-confidence.
Thanks to my teammates, the first goal was no problem; I get on brilliantly with all of them. Now all I had to do was work on their confidence in my racing. But for the first two stages it was more about struggling with myself and getting used to the new bike.
And then came the important team time trial, something that was not only vital for the tour, but that also paves the way for the Giro. The team was in excellent harmony and achieved a well-deserved win. And so began the success story. The win gave every rider the motivation and strength needed to keep the leader’s jersey in the team. I was proud to set the pace for much of the third and fourth stages and to chase the breakaway group. We garnered increased respect from the other teams with just the individual time trial to go. And it couldn’t have gone better. First and second in the general classification was more than we could ever have hoped for. This just goes to show that the wildcard for the Giro was absolutely justified.
Ultimately, I achieved both of the goals I set myself. I felt better than ever after the tour and through my efforts won the confidence of my team. And that is the foundation for success.
See you soon,
