Leo Koenig fights to claim a spot on the podium in the final stage of the Tour of Utah
The final stage of the Tour of Utah, which started and finished in Park City and covered 121 kilometers, turned out to be a nerve-racking finale. NetApp's Leo König, like all of the other riders with their sights set on finishing as the overall winner, was in a lead group and fought for every single second. With a surprising attack and a solo ride, Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma Quickstep) ultimately claimed the stage victory ahead of Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank) and Leo König. By fiercely fighting for his third place stage finish, Leo König completed the Tour of Utah in 3rd place in the general classification. The overall winner was Johann Tschopp (BMC Racing Team).
As expected, the climb to the Empire Pass at 1,000 meters of altitude was decisive. A group of favorites formed here, which also included NetApp's Leo König. Levi Leipheimer was able to break away from this group about 20 kilometers before the finish, and none of the favorites for the overall victory were able to keep up. The fight for spots on the podium in the general classification came down to a matter of seconds. Leo König fought to claim third in the final ranking by speeding up on the descent, attacking shortly before the finish and sprinting into third place for the day.
"That was an outstanding performance by Leo and the entire team. Our goal for this tour was to finish on the podium and we managed to do it. Leo had a fighting spirit and was in top form. His performance on the mountain was outstanding. Two podium finishes in the stages and third in the general classification are a good result. I am proud of what the team accomplished here this week," Ralph Denk, Team Manager of Team NetApp, concluded.
