Jan Barta 27th in opening ITT of Giro d’Italia

Team News | 05.05.2012

In the opening time trial of the Giro d’Italia in the Danish town of Herning, Jan Barta came in 27th as Team NetApp’s best rider. Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing Team) will be the first to wear the Maglia Rosa; Geraint Thomas (Sky Procycling) and Alex Rasmussen (Garmin-Barracuda) came in second and third place.

The 8.7-kilometre course in Herning was technically demanding. In addition to several sharp curves on the first half of the route, a headwind during the second half made the time trial all the more difficult.  “I’m satisfied with the team’s performance. The riders stayed completely within our range of expectations. Jan rode to a remarkable result by finishing 27th. The world’s best riders are starting in the Giro, so we put up a good fight,” Sport Director Jens Heppner said in his assessment.

The start and finish of tomorrow’s second stage of the Giro d’Italia will also be in Herning. 60 of the total 206 kilometers go along the North Sea, with a local 12.4-km finishing lap awaiting riders at the end. “Tomorrow might be a really hard race with a lot of crosswind. Here the key will be to ride extremely attentively from the very beginning,” Heppner explained.
